The prices of leeks and sprouts grow through the winter weather. According to spokeswoman Anne-Marie Vangeenberghe of Farmers is a greater demand for winter vegetables like leeks. "And this again is almost impossible to harvest. It happens, but in difficult circumstances. The demand is increasing, the supply drops, so prices rise."
Cool in leek cells
The Farmers expect the price trend continues. "The cold keeps on, the offer is limited. Currently, leeks still kept in cold storage. The longer the cold, the smaller the stock."
Broken Frozen
For sprouts a similar story. Agriculture Expert speaks Luc Busschaert damage to Brussels sprouts exposed to the wind side of the hanging plant. "At temperatures of minus 10 or even less chance of internal brown frozen or broken sticks," he said.
No quality
But the Farmers have no idea of quality time being. "The snow has an insulating factor (…) It is not exceptionally cold. Sprouts are ancient winter vegetables that can withstand the weather."
Serre Vegetables
Moreover, not only would the leeks and shoot prices rise. "For the price of greenhouse vegetables has to come from other European countries. Tomatoes and peppers are probably more expensive because the supply in other European countries will decline. It is a phenomenon that we identify each year around the holidays." (belga / CBD)
